Assumes the two joist ends at each joint can share one pedestal. Supports are included at both edges. Spacing is adjusted to stay within your entered limits and place joints at support positions.

How this estimate is calculated

Joist rows = ceil(12 ÷ 1.3) + 1 = 11.

11 rows × 6 pedestals per row = 66 pedestals.

11 rows × ceil(12 ÷ 7.2) = 22 stock joists.

Short cross joists = (ceil(12 ÷ 2.5) + 1) × (11 − 1) = 60 pieces at 16 inches each.

Cross-joist positions include both edges and are evenly spaced no more than 2.5 feet apart. Each position has one piece in every gap. Confirm cuts and connections to suit the actual row spacing; the diagram is schematic.

The planner rounds up to whole rows and whole stock lengths, then chooses cuts so every joint sits at a support position. For some dimensions, supported joints require more pedestal positions than a simple uninterrupted grid.

Boards always run across the joists: 27 courses at 5.5″. Every board end lands on a joist: joints at 6 ft, so each board is cut to 6 + 6 ft.

Joist quantities use whole lengths for each row. Offcuts are not reused between rows. Cuts are nominal; saw kerf and connector gaps are not modeled. Optional extras use ceil(base quantity × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)).

All inputs are decimal feet: 1.3 ft = 15.6 inches; 7.2 ft = 86.4 inches. Spacing values are your planning inputs, not verified span ratings.

Project details

Material estimate only. Board count = deck area ÷ 4.583 sq ft per board, rounded up. Clip count = deck area ÷ 0.65, rounded up; boxes = clips ÷ 250, rounded up. Board cutting waste is excluded; use the extra allowance as needed. Confirm permitted spans and joint details. Excludes additional perimeter framing, other blocking and fixings and special site conditions.

Estimate updated: 66 pedestals, 22 aluminum joists, 60 short cross joists, 32 deck boards and 1 boxes of clips.
